What to Expect When You're Expecting?
New experiences can be intimidating, as we do not know what will happen. When asking existing mothers around you, there are so many different experiences that you are confused. So, what should you expect when you're expecting? Here are some of the common symptoms you can face during your journey of becoming a Mother:
Nausea
Heard of morning sickness? Often happening one month after you become pregnant, you will feel the need to vomit. Expect that nausea will hit you at any time of the day or night. Morning sickness happens because of the rising hormone levels. To relieve this, try to avoid having an empty stomach. Try to eat something in small quantities slowly every 1 or 2 hours.
Increased Need to Urinate
Due to the increased amount of blood in the body, the kidneys are processing more fluids. The fluids will end up in the bladder, increasing the amount of urine. Expect the need to pee for what seems like a thousand times a day.
Tender, Swollen Breasts
Hormone changes cause your breasts to feel sore and sensitive. Don't worry, it will not last the whole span of pregnancy, but only until your body is used to the hormonal changes.
Mood Swings
With the burdens of being a new mother and other responsibilities as an adult/working adult, the weights on your shoulders might be a little too heavy. You will feel a mix of emotions all at once - delight, anxiety, and exhaustion, etc. Don't keep the overwhelming thoughts to yourself, but consult a doctor, a friend, or a family member.
Constipation
Due to the high hormone (progesterone) levels, food processed can be slower than usual. Some Mothers shared that they have experienced it during their whole 9 months! To relieve constipation, try taking more fiber-rich foods or fiber tablets. Drink more water, too!
Food Aversions
While pregnant, you might be more sensitive to the odor and taste of certain foods. The foods you loved might not be what you love anymore, and you might crave the weirdest, least-expected foods instead.
In addition to all these, there are so many other changes you might face while being pregnant - weight gain, (over)watching your diet, and "mom-brain." All in all, embrace and enjoy the journey of motherhood! Eat healthily, take up a yoga class (or any work out class), hear your baby's heartbeat for the very first time, feel their kicks in your tummy, go ALL OUT decorating the baby's room, shopping for baby clothes and those little shoes! It will be quite a journey, but is it not the beauty of becoming a Mother?
