Survival Tips for The Expecting Dad
Updated: Feb 11, 2019
Everyone loves giving advice about Motherhood, everyone seems to have tips on nursing, pregnancy pains and giving birth. But no one really tells Dad what to do, and it may feel like you’re on your own sometimes. But never fear! Here are 5 tips to start off your journey on the right foot.
#1 Mummy’s the Boss
We get it, pregnancy is difficult for dad too. But for Mum, she has to deal with terrible morning sickness, sore feet and big physical and mental changes. Your job is to make all that a little easier on her.
Do the chores around the house, run errands for her and get her sushi when she asks for it. The occasional foot scrub, back rub and spa day will also make her day and make carrying a little coming soon much, much easier.
#2 Read Up and Be Hands-on
What will a baby need in their life? How should you feed them, play with them, change their diapers – it might sound difficult at first, but the more you practice the better you get at being a dad. The plus point is that it gives you a chance to bond with your little one and gives your partner a break while she’s recovering from birth.
#3 Take Time Out
When your baby arrives, it can be tempting to dive back into work in the hopes of starting on their college fund, especially in Singapore. But you won’t get a second chance to be there for all your little one’s firsts – from their first smile to their first word. Make family time a priority and schedule specific blocks of bonding time with your new family unit.
#4 Communicate
Even before your little coming soon arrives, your relationship with your partner could get strained. Having a baby is stressful for both Mums and Dads – so keep communicating and supporting each other. Take the time to understand each other’s parenting styles and expectations of parenthood and of your relationship. When the baby comes, consider having a date night or two as soon as you’re able to leave your little one with a trusted family member or nanny.
#5 Plan Ahead
Having a baby in Singapore is a huge investment, and likely to be something your family will need to take time to recover from. In order to avoid over-spending, plan your budget way ahead of the pregnancy, if possible. This means that as soon as you and your partner feel ready to try having your own child, start budgeting and researching your options. Whether through investments or getting new insurance policies, you’ll need to have a solid savings plan and a good understanding of your own finances.
When it comes to your little one, the little things count. Every small effort puts you closer to your goal to be #1 Dad. It doesn’t have to be difficult either, as you and your partner have each other to rely on while on this journey. Do what you can and never be afraid of asking for help when you feel you’re in over your head.
