All About Postpartum Depression

LittleComingSoon

Inevitably, some of you have heard about postpartum depression. In some TV series episodes show the effects of postpartum depression in the family; Mothers having the signs, and how it affects not only the Mothers themselves, but their family members - husbands and children alike. Postpartum depression is NOT just an episode from a TV series, mind you, but a severe problem in reality. So, what is postpartum depression?

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION:

Postpartum depression is a type of depression suffered after childbirth, typically after 4 to 6 weeks, which lasts for an extended period. Postpartum depression affects mood and daily activities and hormonal levels. NOTE THAT not only Mothers are subjected to postpartum depression but Fathers and children, too! According to medical studies, Postpartum affects mostly younger aged Mothers and those who have had a history of depression.

SYMPTOMS OF POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION:

  1. Feeling sad and cry for no reason

  2. Extreme mood swings

  3. Insomnia

  4. Inability to do daily activities

  5. Unexplained pains and aches

  6. Unable to remember certain things

  7. Pulling away from friends and family

  8. Feeling disconnected to your baby

  9. Feel the need to harm yourself and your baby

If you (or other family members) are experiencing these symptoms, fret not as it is not the end of the world! There is a high incidence rate of postpartum depression around the globe, and it is not untreatable! Similar to treating depression, antidepressants and antipsychotics can also treat it.

LIST OF THINGS YOU CAN DO:

1. RELAX AND CHILL

Let's face it. You pushed and brought life into this world, and although miraculous, it was most probably the worst experience to go through. You NEED the rest - cut back on chores, take walks, drink wine (in moderation), and enjoy your life!

2. COMMUNICATE

First, consult your OB-GYN or your therapist. Share your thoughts and feelings - LET IT ALL OUT! Of course, it can be challenging to reach out to your loved ones, but try to communicate and let them know how it is like for you and how they can help.

3. ACTIVITIES

It is normal to feel indifferent about your current/ongoing interest when you have postpartum. Almost everything would feel meaningless and just... Boring. As part of relaxing and putting the challenges way behind you, pick up a new and exciting hobby or something you have always wanted to do for fun! This way, your brain will generate dopamines (happy hormones), and definitely, you'll be satisfied.

Hopefully, this article brings you awareness on postpartum depression and how you or your family members can pull through upon diagnosis. I believe the warmth and affection of a family can cure all sickness and sadness, big or small! Remember to smile and know that you are stronger than any challenges that come your way!
